Super Kazakh rugs are hand-knotted in Afghanistan by weavers who've inherited techniques that trace back centuries to the Caucasus mountains. The "super" refers to the higher knot density that allows for sharper, more intricate designs than standard Kazakh rugs.
These rugs start with hand-spun wool, carefully twisted before a single knot is tied. That hand-spinning creates natural variations in the yarn's thickness, giving Super Kazakhs their distinctive depth and almost silky sheen when light hits them. Those same irregularities make the wool tougher and more hardwearing.
The designs are unmistakably Kazakh: bold geometric patterns featuring large medallions, hooked polygons, stylised animals, and tribal symbols passed down through generations. Each pattern sits within distinctive borders of repeating geometric motifs.
