Vintage Persian Shiraz Runner

Hand-knotted by tribal weavers in villages surrounding the ancient city of Shiraz in southwestern Iran's Fars Province. The region is home to nomadic and semi-nomadic tribes, who have maintained their weaving traditions for generations. Shiraz sits near the ruins of Persepolis and is known among Iranians for its relaxed culture, gardens, and rich literary history.

The construction uses the Persian asymmetric knot with strong, locally sourced wool. These are robust, utilitarian pieces built to withstand daily use. The weaving can be coarser than city rugs, and because they're hand-made on traditional looms, slight distortions are common, considered part of their authentic, tribal character rather than flaws.

Designs are bold and geometric: central diamond medallions, interconnected diamond patterns, stylised animals, tribal symbols. Common motifs include the tree of life, nightingales (representing contentment and happiness), and sometimes depictions of Cyrus's horse. Borders typically feature bands of pine and palm leaves.

Each Shiraz rug is unique because it's fully hand-made, no two are alike. The weavers work from memory and personal inspiration rather than precise patterns, ensuring every piece carries its own story. Once completed, the rugs are taken to Shiraz's main market where traders gather collections for export, continuing a tradition that has connected these tribal weavers to the wider world for centuries.
