Maimana and Faryab kilims are the heart of this size, the Faryab with a tighter, finer weave that sharpens its geometry. Afghan Chobi, Yekta and Balkh rugs offer a low, smooth pile, the Balkh being the most finely knotted of the Chobi family. Vintage Persian Shiraz, Kerman, Hamadan and Bakhtiari rugs and Qashqai kilims add age and character, and some newer pieces have only just come off the loom.

Around 240 × 160 cm suits a smaller lounge or the space under a coffee table, with the sofa's front legs just touching the edge. It also works well in a bedroom, set two-thirds under a queen bed so there's soft ground on either side when you step out.
