Striped

Stripes and bands give a rug rhythm, and in handmade pieces every line wavers just enough to show the hand that wove it.

Many of our striped pieces are kilims: Maimana and Faryab kilims in Ghazni wool, where bands of diamonds and chevrons run across the width, and vintage Persian Qashqai kilims woven by nomadic women in the Fars Province of Iran. In pile, Afghan Pashm rugs set stripes into a long, shaggy surface, while Afghan Yekta rugs and our own Kohi designs use banding more quietly. Abrash, the natural shift in tone where a new batch of wool begins, often shows in stripes as gentle changes in colour.

A striped runner can make a hallway feel longer, while a banded kilim under a dining table or bed gives a room structure without heavy ornament. Stripes also sit well with plain upholstery and simple timber furniture.
