This early 1900s silk on silk Suzani is defined by its structured layout and symbolic repetition. The design is built around a large open centre, framed by a series of repeating floral medallions arranged with strong symmetry. This format was intentional, often used for textiles that would be hung or placed in a way where the central space remained visible, sometimes left open for practical or ceremonial use.

The motifs themselves are deeply rooted in Suzani tradition. The large, stylised floral forms are not literal flowers, but symbolic interpretations representing growth, fertility and the continuation of family. The branching elements extending from each form can be read as life paths or lineage, a quiet reference to the bride’s transition into a new household.

The repeated circular centres within each motif are also significant. In many Central Asian textiles, circular forms are associated with protection and unity, acting almost as visual anchors throughout the composition. The small red accents scattered between the larger motifs add rhythm to the design, breaking up the symmetry and bringing movement across the surface.

The border is finely worked with vine-like patterns, enclosing the piece and reinforcing a sense of completeness. In traditional Suzani work, borders weren’t just decorative, they were believed to act as a form of protection, containing the energy and meaning within the textile.

Executed entirely in silk, both the base and embroidery, the material adds another layer of depth. The way the silk catches light subtly shifts the visibility of the pattern, bringing different elements forward depending on how it’s viewed.

Pieces of this calibre, with silk on silk construction and such a considered composition, are increasingly difficult to find. A rare example that holds both material significance and cultural meaning.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will the rug look the same in person as it does online?

We photograph every rug in natural light with minimal editing, so the colours you see are as true to life as possible. It’s something we take a lot of care with, and something our customers often comment on.

That said, colours can shift slightly depending on your screen or the lighting in your home. If you’d like extra photos or a video before purchasing, we’re always happy to help.
