Loved, Rug After Rug
About This Rug
Knotted by Hand in Iran
This rug comes from Tabriz, a city in northwestern Iran that has been weaving since at least the 12th century, making it one of the oldest continuous weaving traditions in all of Persia. During the Safavid dynasty, Tabriz weavers were commissioned to produce rugs for royal palaces and important holy sites.
The reputation built then has never left. These are city rugs, made by professional weavers who spent years mastering their craft. The designs were family knowledge, passed down through generations and woven entirely from memory. Each weaving family treated their patterns as heirlooms and the motifs carried meaning, weeping willows for love, oak trees for strength and courage, pomegranates for abundance and luck. What looks like decoration is actually a language.
This vintage Persian Tabriz rug is hand-knotted in wool over a cotton foundation. The construction is dense and tightly woven, producing a surface that holds its detail and wears exceptionally well over time.

Good to Know
Will the rug look the same in person as it does online?
We photograph every rug in natural light with minimal editing, so the colours you see are as true to life as possible. It’s something we take a lot of care with, and something our customers often comment on.
That said, colours can shift slightly depending on your screen or the lighting in your home. If you’d like extra photos or a video before purchasing, we’re always happy to help.
How long does delivery usually take?
Delivery times depend on your location.
For most Australian orders, delivery is quite quick. NSW and VIC typically arrive within 1–2 business days, the ACT within 2–3 business days, QLD and TAS within 2–4 business days, and WA and the NT within 3–6 business days.
Most international deliveries arrive within 1–4 weeks.
You can find more detailed timeframes on our Shipping & Delivery page: Shipping & Delivery.
What if the rug isn't quite right?
We want you to feel completely confident in your purchase. If something doesn’t feel right once you’ve seen it in your space, we’re here to help.
We accept returns or exchanges on full-priced items, meaning pieces that are not part of our clearance collection.
Returns must be initiated within 7 days of receiving your order, or within 7 days of purchase if bought in person.
As each rug is handmade and one of a kind, we keep this window short so that any returned piece can be offered again in the same condition.
Rugs must be returned in the same condition they were received.
For full details, please see our Returns & Exchanges page: Returns & Exchanges.
Can I see this rug in person before I decide?
Of course. We're at our Rowville warehouse most days and you're welcome to come in and browse.
Give us a call before you head over and we'll have this rug, and anything else you'd like to compare, laid out and ready for you.
Do I need an underlay?
We recommend one under every rug and kilim. A good underlay stops the rug moving, protects your floors and helps the rug wear evenly for longer.
Ask us and we'll suggest the right one for your floor and rug size.
How do I look after it?
Handmade wool rugs are easy to live with. Vacuum weekly on a low setting, moving with the pile and without the beater bar, and never vacuum the fringes. Rotate the rug every few months so it wears evenly, and blot spills straight away rather than rubbing.
Our Rug Care guide covers the rest.
The Najaf Way

Made to Be Lived On
These pieces weren't made for a showroom. They were made to be walked on, lived with and passed down. Chosen well, a rug like this outlasts the house it's in.

Chosen by Najaf
