Hand-knotted by the Lori tribes who inhabit the rugged Zagros Mountain regions of western and southwestern Iran, these rugs reflect one of Persia’s oldest tribal weaving traditions. The Lori people have lived across areas spanning the region for centuries. Historically semi-nomadic pastoralists, the Lori tribes moved seasonally through mountain valleys with their livestock, and weaving developed as an essential household craft used to furnish tents and homes.

Unlike workshop or city rugs woven from precise graphs, Lori rugs are typically created from memory, intuition, and generational knowledge passed down through families. This gives them a highly individual and spontaneous character with more rustic aesthetic and strong tribal identity.

Construction traditionally features hand-spun wool piled onto wool or occasionally cotton foundations, using the Persian asymmetric knot. The wool is often sourced from the tribe’s own sheep grazing in high-altitude pastures, producing fibres that are durable yet soft with a natural lustre. The weaving is typically sturdy and practical, designed to withstand everyday living. As with most tribal pieces, slight irregularities in shape and pattern are expected and celebrated as hallmarks of genuine hand craftsmanship rather than imperfections.

Many Lori rugs incorporate ancient tribal symbols and protective motifs believed to bring good fortune and ward off harm. Occasionally, stylised animals, plants, and abstract interpretations of the natural landscape appear, reflecting the weavers’ close connection to their mountainous environment.

Every Lori rug is entirely unique, shaped by the individual weaver’s creativity and daily life rather than strict design rules. Once completed, these rugs were historically traded through regional markets and caravan routes, allowing them to travel far beyond the Zagros Mountains while preserving the spirit and cultural heritage of the Lori people.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will the rug look the same in person as it does online?

We photograph every rug in natural light with minimal editing, so the colours you see are as true to life as possible. It’s something we take a lot of care with, and something our customers often comment on.

That said, colours can shift slightly depending on your screen or the lighting in your home. If you’d like extra photos or a video before purchasing, we’re always happy to help.

How long does delivery usually take?

Delivery times depend on your location.

Can I see this rug in person before I decide?

Of course. You’re very welcome to visit our Rowville warehouse to view rugs in person.
