Loved, Rug After Rug
About This Rug
Knotted by Hand in Afghanistan
The Bokhara design takes its name from the ancient Silk Road city of Bukhara in present-day Uzbekistan, where the Tekke Turkmen tribe first wove the repeating gul pattern that became one of the most recognised motifs in the history of rug weaving. From there, the pattern spread, carried by Turkmen weavers into Afghanistan, Uzbekistan and across the Central Asian steppe and was adopted and reinterpreted by weavers in multiple traditions.
This rug is hand-knotted in the Bokhara tradition from hand-spun wool on a wool foundation. The repeating gul medallions are arranged in precise rows across the field, the fundamental visual rhythm of the Bokhara tradition, a pattern of such strong internal logic that it has remained largely unchanged for centuries.
Secondary motifs fill the spaces between the major guls and a structured geometric border frames the composition. The palette draws from the natural dye traditions of Turkmen weaving, deep madder reds, indigo blues and undyed natural wool tones that have had decades to settle into a richness that synthetic alternatives cannot approximate.

Good to Know
Will the rug look the same in person as it does online?
We photograph every rug in natural light with minimal editing, so the colours you see are as true to life as possible. It’s something we take a lot of care with, and something our customers often comment on.
That said, colours can shift slightly depending on your screen or the lighting in your home. If you’d like extra photos or a video before purchasing, we’re always happy to help.
How long does delivery usually take?
Delivery times depend on your location.
For most Australian orders, delivery is quite quick. NSW and VIC typically arrive within 1–2 business days, the ACT within 2–3 business days, QLD and TAS within 2–4 business days, and WA and the NT within 3–6 business days.
Most international deliveries arrive within 1–4 weeks.
You can find more detailed timeframes on our Shipping & Delivery page: Shipping & Delivery.
What if the rug isn't quite right?
We want you to feel completely confident in your purchase. If something doesn’t feel right once you’ve seen it in your space, we’re here to help.
We accept returns or exchanges on full-priced items, meaning pieces that are not part of our clearance collection.
Returns must be initiated within 7 days of receiving your order, or within 7 days of purchase if bought in person.
As each rug is handmade and one of a kind, we keep this window short so that any returned piece can be offered again in the same condition.
Rugs must be returned in the same condition they were received.
For full details, please see our Returns & Exchanges page: Returns & Exchanges.
Can I see this rug in person before I decide?
Of course. We're at our Rowville warehouse most days and you're welcome to come in and browse.
Give us a call before you head over and we'll have this rug, and anything else you'd like to compare, laid out and ready for you.
Do I need an underlay?
We recommend one under every rug and kilim. A good underlay stops the rug moving, protects your floors and helps the rug wear evenly for longer.
Ask us and we'll suggest the right one for your floor and rug size.
How do I look after it?
Handmade wool rugs are easy to live with. Vacuum weekly on a low setting, moving with the pile and without the beater bar, and never vacuum the fringes. Rotate the rug every few months so it wears evenly, and blot spills straight away rather than rubbing.
Our Rug Care guide covers the rest.
The Najaf Way

Made to Be Lived On
These pieces weren't made for a showroom. They were made to be walked on, lived with and passed down. Chosen well, a rug like this outlasts the house it's in.

Chosen by Najaf
Our founder has spent 40 years washing, repairing and weaving rugs by hand. When he selects a piece, he knows exactly what he's looking at.

Rugs Like Nowhere Else
Every piece is handpicked or made by us. Never in bulk, never for trend. Only because it genuinely stopped us in our tracks.
